Built by accountants

The ledger logic was set up by accountants who have to be able to work with it themselves. Accurate to the cent.

Why double-entry bookkeeping matters, even if you never use the terms

Behind every invoice and every receipt there's a journal entry: debit and credit, in balance. You see 'booked'. Your accountant sees a general ledger that balances. That's the difference between an invoicing app and bookkeeping that survives an audit.

Balances are calculated live. You can open your balance sheet and profit and loss at any moment, not only after an overnight batch. Built by accountants, so the pennies add up when someone takes a look.

Reports without the jargon up front

You don't need to call someone a debtor to add a client. Under the bonnet it's still a proper set of books: export, archive, statutory retention. Handy if you bring in an accountant later or if the Dutch Tax Administration has a question.

That's also why switching from a spreadsheet makes sense as soon as you file a VAT return every quarter. Excel adds up whatever you put in. A general ledger makes sure the story balances.
